Course description

This intensive 5-day training course will provide you with the knowledge and skills that you need to install, joint, terminate and test fibre optic cabling. This course focuses on the components, equipment and working practices that are typically used for telecoms systems in long distance networks (such as BT's 21CN), where most of the key tasks have to be performed on cabling that is mainly in an external (outside plant) environment.

This course is suitable for technicians who need to be able to install, joint, terminate and test fibre optic cabling for telecoms networks, to the recognised professional standard. Also beneficial to managers and supervisors responsible for contract management.

Objectives

At the end of this course you will be able to:
  • describe how and why fibre optic cabling is used in a telecoms environment for core, metro and access networks
  • explain how singlemode optical fibres work and the issues that can affect performance
  • identify telecoms link components and explain their uses
  • work safely in an external environment and on fibre optic telecoms systems
  • follow recommended installation practices
  • prepare fibre optic cabling for splicing within a joint enclosure and ODFs
  • fusion splice and manage fibre in a cable joint enclosure
  • joint a customer drop cable into a main network cable
  • terminate fibre optic cables by splicing on pre-terminated pigtails
  • test fibre optic telecoms links using recognised procedures
  • troubleshoot fibre optic cabling

Current prices are valid until 31st December 2010. Prices are quoted excluding UK vat (17.5%). All courses are quoted as non-residential. On all public courses and other courses held at OTT own premises the price for the course includes lunch & refreshments, but not accommodation. Refreshments & lunch are not provided by OTT for courses held on customers' own premises.

*A London weighting of £100+vat per day is charged on company on-site courses run within the M25.

There is no other additional charge for travelling expenses or tutors' accommodation for on-site company courses in mainland UK unless agreed in advance. Company courses are quoted for up to 6 delegates which is the maximum for all practical courses. Certain other courses may take up to 8 delegates at an additional cost.
